MANILA — In an effort to better improve the Philippines ranking in the world of 3×3 basketball, the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) announced its inclusion in the 45th PBA Season which is set to unfold Sunday, 08 March at the Araneta Coliseum.
This was announced by no less than PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial during the league’s pre-season press conference Tuesday at the Conrad Hotel Pasay City.
Also Tuesday, PBA Board Vice Chair and Columbian Dyip Governor Demosthenes Rosales also announced that aside from the regular 12 PBA teams, Mighty Bond and Dunkin Donuts are also fielding teams for the tournament.
No less than Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas President and Meralco Governor Al Panlilio expressed his elation over the news that the PBA will now support their 3×3 program.
“If we want to be serious with 3×3, we make it a stand alone tournament,” he said.
The SBP president also said that he believes 3×3 caging is one sport where Filipinos can land a spot in the Olympics “If not in 2020, maybe in the next one (2024) in Paris,” he added.
Inclusion in PBA’s regular event is accordingly a good follow up development to the country’s victory in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games where PBA players CJ Perez, Jason Perkins, Mo Tautuaa, and Jason Perkins bagged the gold and so with the distaff side.
Unlike regular PBA teams, drafting of players for the 3×3 event will not be held but the teams have the option to choose who they want to field in for the tournament Marcial said.
However, Marcial added that 3×3 players can not automatically join the professional ranks.
The 3×3 games will be played during PBA regular play dates in Metro Manila. (ISMAEL AMIGO/sovereignph.com)
