MANILA —Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) newly-assigned president Atsuhiro Okamoto did the unthinkable as he tried out several modes of mass transportation in Metro Manila.
The reason behind it is for him to allegedly understand fully what Filipino commuters go through every day.
His first week tour of duty in the Philippines, Okamoto said, involved taking a round trip on the MRT, queued for a long time for a UV Express ride, rode a jeepney and took a tricycle to Tondo.
“I decided to do Genchi Genbutsu (go and see) the daily struggles of Filipino commuters,” Okamoto said.
Later Okamoto averred that he realized that the Philippines’ mass transport system is not enough to accommodate the huge number of daily commuters, unlike in his native Japan or Singapore.
And after experiencing the status of PH’s mass transport system, Okamoto claimed Toyota might take part in this big challenge to upgrade the quality of life of many Filipinos.
“For me, it’s a good learning experience,” Okamoto said.
It may be recalled that last year, presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo also took the challenge from critics to commute in order to experience what ordinary Filipino commuters have to endure every day.
That followed after Bayan secretary general Renato Reyes Jr. told Panelo the current situation of the mass transport system is already considered a crisis and for Panelo to see it for himself.
And he did. (Ismael Amigo/sovereignph.com)
