MANILA – Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go on Wednesday urged the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to conduct monthly fire prevention and information campaign in all local government units (LGUs), especially in crowded communities to better safeguard Filipinos from destructive fires.

“Yung fire education, safety measures natin dito. Hindi lang naman po para i-improve yung mga equipment natin, ang atin dito is paano din natin ma-prevent at maturuan ang ating mga kababayan (Fire education is one of our safety measures. More than improving our equipment, our point here is on how we can also prevent fires and educate our countrymen),” Go said during a hearing on the various bills seeking to modernize the BFP.

He said the prevention and information drives should be especially intensified in crowded communities, in both rural and urban areas, as fires usually occur in depressed areas.

“Hindi lamang po dapat ‘yung establishment ang tinitignan ninyo. ‘Yung mga maliliit na bahay po ang tingnan niyong mabut. ‘Di naman po usually nag-e-emanate ‘yung sunog dito sa mga establishment. kadalasan dito sa mga maliliit talaga at mga liblib na lugar (You should not only look at establishments. You should focus on small houses. Fires don’t usually emanate from establishments, but from small houses and in hard to reach areas),” Go said, citing his personal experience from his frequent visits to fire victims in communities around the country.

Go made the call as he urged for the passage of a bill that would modernize the country’s firefighting capability, stressing that the BFP modernization program is one of the legislative priorities of the administration.

“President Rodrigo Duterte, himself, understands the severity of the fire problem the country faces. During his State of the Nation last year, he even called us, legislators, to pass a law mandating a fire protection modernization program,” he said.

Among the bills seeking to modernize the BFP is Senate Bill No. 204 that he authored.

The proposed measure aims to provide the BFP with modern fire equipment, and resources to hire and train more personnel to beef up its manpower.

SB 204 also proposes the establishment of Fire Protection Services (FPS) and rescue hotlines in all LGUs to help local governments respond immediately to fires, accidents, disasters, and calamities.

“We have no time to waste. Instead of letting another property be destroyed or one more life perished due to these preventable hazards, let us all support the passage of this measure and show our searing passion to protect the safety and well-being of our people,” Go said. (iam/
