MANILA – More than 40,000 Filipinos abroad have registered as overseas voters since the start of the registration period in December last year, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) reported on Friday.
Based on the latest report released by the Overseas Voting Secretariat (OVS), there are 40,878 new voters overseas that registered from Dec. 16, 2019 to Mar. 4, 2020.
The figures came from the 89 Philippine posts abroad and nine field registration centers in the country.
The Middle East has the highest number of registrants at 26,072.
It was followed by the Asia Pacific region with 6,474 while there are 4,814 newly-registered overseas in the Americas.
Europe has the lowest number of overseas voter registrants with 1,706.
On the other hand, the nine local field registration centers recorded 1,812 registered overseas voters since February 13.
There are about 1.3 million Filipino voters overseas.
The Comelec is looking to have two million registered voters abroad for the May 2022 elections. (ia/PNA)
