TACLOBAN CITY – Samples from 23 patients under investigation (PUIs) in Eastern Visayas tested negative for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), the Department of Health (DOH) reported on Saturday.
“The PUIs are now cleared and for discharge from their respective referral hospitals,” said Minerva Molon, DOH Eastern Visayas director, in a press statement.
Of the 23 patients, 10 were from Leyte, five from Tacloban City, three from Southern Leyte, two from Northern Samar, and one each from Ormoc City, Eastern Samar, and Biliran.
Molon said they were the first batch of samples sent to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in Cebu City on Tuesday.
The VSMMC is the sub-national laboratory for Covid-19 testing in the Visayas, accredited and authorized by the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Metro Manila.
“All specimens from the region will now be sent to this institution. It will provide us easier access and will decongest the RITM,” Molon said.
Meanwhile, the second batch of samples from 22 PUIs in Eastern Visayas arrived in Cebu City on Saturday, according to the health department.
Since the global outbreak, the health department has recorded a total of 379 PUIs – 77 from Northern Samar, 75 from Samar, 56 from Southern Leyte, 46 from Leyte, 45 from Biliran, 44 from Eastern Samar, 32 from this city, and four from Ormoc City.
As of Saturday, the region has one confirmed case of Covid-19, a 51-year-old female from Catarman, Northern Samar.
“We give credits to the task force, front-liners, and other organizations for the progress of our interventions in fighting Covid-19 in the region,” Molon said. (PNA)
