ILIGAN CITY – The Holy Week observation here deviated from long-held traditions because of the threat of 2019 coronavirus disease (Covid-19).
Instead of the usual attendance in churches, parishioners are advised to watch the mass celebration of the Lord’s Passion through online live streaming via Facebook in their homes.
Leading the Good Friday ceremonies was the newly minted bishop of the Diocese of Iligan, Jose Rapadas III, who personally carried the crucifix as he went around the streets of the city, passing through the houses of parishioners.
“The crucifix symbolizes the sacrifices of Jesus, his death and resurrection so that those devotees at home that I will pass by may feel the persistence of the love of Jesus Christ,” Rapadas said.
Rapadas asked the devotees to kneel down to venerate when the crucifix passed by while he delivered blessings and made the sign of the cross.
However, several videos of the religious activity appeared to show that some devotees who showed up along the streets to greet religious convoy failed to observe physical distancing.
The motorcade was broadcast live through the Dioceses Iligan Facebook Page, and a similar arrangement will be done on Easter Sunday, April 12. (PNA)
