COTABATO CITY – Police arrested on Sunday four senior citizens caught in the act of gambling amid the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) being observed in Upi, Maguindanao.
Major Esmael Madin, chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Maguindanao, said the suspects will be charged for violation of Republic Act 11469 (Bayanihan to Heal as One Act) and Proclamation No. 922 (Declaring the State of Public Health Emergency throughout the Philippines).
Madin identified those arrested as Nelia Arpolar, Vicente Palarisan, Nestor Jeleron, and Marivic Meria, all senior citizens, and residents of Barangay Poblacion Nuro, Upi, Maguindanao.
“They were all caught in the act of playing mahjong,” Madin said.
Seized from the suspects were mahjong playing tiles and bet money amounting to PHP700.
“This just proves that no one is exempted from the law regardless of age during these trying times,” Madin said.
He said a tipster called them regarding the mahjong activity of the senior citizens in the area, despite repeated appeals from relatives for them to stop their pastime game because of the crisis brought by the 2019 coronavirus disease. (PNA)
