GAPAN CITY, Nueva Ecija – Local government units (LGUs) in this province are set to distribute cash and food assistance to the people affected by the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) health crisis.
In this city, the city government will start handing out assistance to every family on Tuesday.
Mayor Emerson Pascual said one 50-kilo sack of rice and PHP1,000 cash will be delivered to every doorstep, including to non-residents who are stuck here due to the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), which has been extended for 15 more days.
This is the second time that the residents here will receive 50 kilos of rice since the start of the ECQ.
Aside from rice, the city government also distributed live chickens, chicken products and processed meat.
In a video posted on Facebook, Pascual, along with Vice Mayor Inocencio Bautista and members of Sangguniang Panlungsod, assured residents that no one will be left out in the distribution of assistance for the whole duration of the ECQ.
“Yun pong bigas, andiyan na kumpleto. Sigurado po namin bawat bahay, bawat pintuan ay malalagyan ng bigas (The rice is already here and it is complete. We want to assure that every house, every doorstep will be placed with rice),” Pascual said.
He said there is no prior listing of beneficiaries but every cent spent in the purchase of the food aid will be properly accounted for.
“Yun po ang purpose kung bakit narito ang mga pera na ito. Ibig sabihin nakahanda kami (That is the purpose why the money is here. It means that we are ready),” he said. The city has some 36,000 households.
Pascual said the money belonged to the people, and is only managed by the city government.
The PHP104-million supplemental budget approved by the council, he said, was beefed up by the over PHP50-million support downloaded by the Department of Budget and Management.
“The city has also an untouched PHP4-million donation from the private sector,” Pascual added.
In Cabanatuan City, Mayor Myca Elizabeth Vergara told his father, Vice Mayor Julius Cesar Vergara, in a televised conversation that the city government has prepared for more rounds of relief operations.
The city government has so far delivered in three waves 30 kilograms of rice (10 kgs. per wave) and a whole dressed chicken.
These were augmented with 10 kgs. of rice from third district Rep. Rosanna Vergara’s personally-funded “Kalinga Para sa Distrito” program that covers Cabanatuan City, Palayan City and the towns of Bongabon, Gabaldon, Laur, Gen. Natividad and Santa Rosa.
The provincial government, on the other hand, is distributing rice from the Nueva Ecija Provincial Food Council.
Governor Aurelio Umali said the rice was milled from palay bought from local farmers. (PNA)
