MANILA – The number of patients infected with the deadly coronavirus disease marched on to 8,772 as the Department of Health recorded 284 new cases Friday, 01 May 2020.
Meanwhile, the number of recoveries improved to 1,084 after 41 survivors received a clean bill of health from attending healthcare workers and were subsequently discharged from confinement.
On the flip-side of it, fatalities slid to 579 after 11 new deaths was reported by the DOH.
Many areas including Metro Manila stay under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) but a less stringent general community quarantine (GCQ) in “low-risk” areas was also introduced Friday, day one of another 14-day quarantine implemented in an effort to stem the spread of the virus.
Amid the health crisis, the government is now faced with a tough job of crafting an economic recovery plan that would allow businesses and public transportation to reopen while avoiding a second wave of infection.
Left with no option, President Duterte placed the whole island of Luzon under ECQ last March 17 that paralyzed business and commerce in the area that generates about 70% of the country’s economic output.
The re-extension of the ECQ will last until May 15 for “high-risk” places including Metro Manila and neighboring areas, while other “low-risk” areas like Davao de Oro will transition to a more relaxed GCQ starting May 1.
