MANILA (First Update) — The Department of Health has on Saturday recorded 156 new local cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

And with it, the official infection toll nationwide closed in on breaking the 9K mark at 8,928. A day before the previous tally was 8,772.

DOH’s COVID-19 case bulletin #049 as of 4 p.m. on May 2 also revealed 40 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 1,124.

Fatalities in the country from the virus climbed to 603 after 24 new deaths were recorded by the DOH.

The World Health Organization had sounded the highest level of alert by declaring that the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic, a “public health emergency of international concern” on January 30.

“We didn’t waste any time,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was quoted as saying in a briefing last Friday. “The world had enough time to intervene.”

Worldwide, confirmed cases of the coronavirus now reached 3,344,274; 1,053,344 recoveries and 238,775 fatalities.
