MANILA, Philippines — About 12 Senate employees have tested positive of the coronavirus disease after undergoing rapid testing hours before session in the upper chamber resumed Monday (04 May 2020).

According to Senate President Vicente Sotto III, the 12 individuals were from the 500 people who underwent rapid testing at the Senate.

They were found to have antibodies that may be linked to the new coronavirus Sotto said.

It was gathered the said COVID-19 positive individuals include two staffers of senators, one waiter, one page and eight from the Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms.

SP Sotto said the 12 people were brought to the hospital for further swab testing and quarantine.

All the 12 senators and staff members who attended the resumption of session at 3 p.m. agreed to undergo rapid testing for COVID-19.

Last week, the Senate president urged the senators “to be physically present” in order for them to vote and change the Senate rules so they can hold sessions and other proceedings via teleconferencing amid the pandemic.

Three senators namely Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri, Senator Aquilino Pimentel III and Senator Juan Edgardo Angara earlier contracted the disease.

But Zubiri and Pimentel have duly recovered from COVID-19 while Angara tested positive anew weeks after he was given a clean bill of health from COVID-19. (ia/
