MANILA — The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday announced another record number of 101 patients to have survived the deadly coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

With the huge number of latest recoveries, the list of survivors from COVID-19 in the country improved to 1,315 although there was another huge count of new cases monitored by the health agency.

The DOH said that 262 more Filipinos tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the number of confirmed cases in the Philippines to 9,485 as of Monday, May 4.

Of the new cases, 122 were recorded in Metro Manila, 88 from Central Visayas and 52 more cases were counted from other regions the DOH said on its infographic material released to media.

Fatalities, meanwhile, rose to 623, after 16 new fatalities were recorded overnight from the coronavirus which continue to challenge health agencies the whole wide world.

The recent COVID-19 statistics announced by the DOH came as the National Capital Region entered its eighth (8th) straight week under lockdown implemented by Malacanang to stem the tide of the virus.

And days before the expiration of the first extension of the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) on April 30, President Rodrigo Duterte decided to extend again the lockdown in Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon to May 15.

Lockdowns have also been implemented in Cebu province, including Cebu City, Antique, Iloilo, Davao del Norte, and Davao City until May 15 while provinces and cities with low risk outbreaks were placed under general community quarantine (GCQ).

It is however, greatly hoped for by the government to transition areas under ECQ to GCQ a day after end of the second extension but health experts said this will depend on epidemiological trends as well as the country’s testing and healthcare capacity.

The government has already expanded its coronavirus testing capability. It is pinning to have at least 8,000 tests per day a social media post by DOH said.

So far, the DOH claims to have conducted tests on 126,164 individuals.

It is only through expanded testing for coronavirus that the country can possibly obtain a clear understanding of the extent of the disease’s spread health experts said.
