MANILA – A third extension of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) is a near possibility as Metro Manila mayors are allegedly keen on recommending to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID).
A third ECQ extension of another 15 days in the National Capital Region (NCR) is most likely Paranaque mayor Edwin Olivarez said as the region continue to register with the biggest number of COVID-19 cases.
“Most likely yun ang tinitignan natin, yung magkaroon ng another 15 days extension,” said Olivarez in an interview with Unang Balita on Friday.
Olivarez is the chairman of the Metro Manila Council.
Made up of all Metro Manila mayors, the group are set to hold a virtual meeting, together with MMDA chair Danilo Lim, on Saturday (09 May 2020) to formalize the recommendation.
Health experts aver the capital could experience a hard second wave of the virus if the ECQ will be lifted immediately or downgraded to general community quarantine (GCQ) after May 15.
It would be more beneficial for NCR said Olivarez if it would implement another 15-day extension of ECQ because Metro cities are “very interconnected.”
“Tulad sa amin sa Paranaque, meron kaming mga residente na nagtatrabaho sa Makati. Kung ang Makati ay GCQ, kami ay ECQ, paano sila makakalagpas papunta dun sa boundary namin?” he said.
However, the MMC is just a recommendatory body and it’s still up to the IATF to decide on the matter. (ia/SovereignPH.com)
