MANILA – New patient admissions of the new pathogen coronavirus disease (COVID-19) reached 292 the Department of Health (DOH) announced on Monday, 11 May 2020, raising to 11,086 the total number of confirmed cases in the country.

Out of the new admissions, it was again the National Capital Region that emerged tops in terms of new cases with 162 followed by Region 7 (Central Visayas) with 74.

Other regions accounted for 56 for the day to make it 292.

The recoveries department is but a patient shy from breaking the 2K mark at 1,999 after registering 75 new survivors of the virus that continue to cripple world economy and challenge scientists the world over to come up with the potent remedy.

As the world races for that potent drug, seven (7) more Filipino patients succumbed to the virus, pushing local fatalities further to 726 as of 4 p.m. Monday.

Duterte yet to announce

As of this writing Monday, President Duterte has yet to announce what step to take for Metro Manila and other areas that remain under enhanced community quarantine after May 15.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Disease was still meeting on the matter and will submit its recommendation to the President by 5 pm, Monday.

If Duterte so decides to extend the lockdown for another 15 days, Metro Manila and other areas will have been under ECQ for as long as Wuhan, China, rumored to be the ground zero of the virus.

The Metro Manila Council, which is made up of the 17 mayors in NCR, had earlier presented the IATF three (3) options:

1.      Extending the enhanced community quarantine by a maximum of two weeks

2.      Transitioning into general community quarantine (GCQ) and

3.      Transitioning into “modified” GCQ allowing the mayors to impose lockdowns on case-heavy barangays

Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) general manager Jojo Garcia earlier said the mayors were prepared on any of the three (3) options the IATF may choose but they accordingly appealed to the President that only one of them be implemented.

COVID-19 is a respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus that, according to unconfirmed reports, originated in China’s city of Wuhan in Hubei province in late 2019.

The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses named the novel coronavirus as SARS-CoV-2.

The virus causes mild symptoms such as fever and cough for most people but can cause serious illness such as pneumonia for others, especially older adults and people with existing health problems.

Coronavirus is one in a family of viruses whose surfaces have a crown-like appearance or corona.

Hence, the viruses are named for the spikes on their surfaces.
