MANILA – Malacañang on Friday extended condolences to the family of former senator Maria Teresa Aquino-Oreta who has passed away.
“Our sincerest condolences to the family, relatives, friends, and colleagues of former Senator Maria Teresa ‘Tessie’ Aquino-Oreta who passed away yesterday, May 14, at the age of 75,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a press statement.
Aquino-Oreta, died on Thursday night, her son Malabon Mayor Antolin Oreta III announced. The cause of her death was not disclosed.
Roque said the Palace would remember Aquino-Oreta for her distinguished career in public service.
He also honored her for serving the country as a senator during the 11th and 12th Congress and as a representative during the 8th, 9th and 10th Congress.
“May perpetual light shine upon the late Senator, and that her soul, through the mercy of God, rest in eternal peace,” Roque said.
Aquino-Oreta was the sister of the late senator Benigno Aquino Jr. As a senator from 1998 to 2004, she focused on education and advocated for better employment, working conditions, and welfare benefits of public school teachers.
Among the bills that she authored or co-authored that were signed into law during her Senate stint were the Early Childhood Care and Development Act, the Philippine High School System Act, Governance of Basic Education Act, Solo Parent Act, and Solid Waste Management Act.
Aquino-Oreta also represented the district of Malabon-Navotas from 1987 to 1998.
She is survived by her husband and four children. (ia/PNA)
