MANILA – The Department of Health on Saturday, 16 May 2020 reported another hundred plus new survivors of the killer disease even as confirmed new cases continued to rise.
Patients cleared of the deadly disease logged in 101 the health agency said, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,561.
And while patients checked out from hospitalization after getting cleared from the disease, there were 214 new cases and thus reported to have been admitted, pushing the number of infected individuals to 12,305.
The COVID-19 death toll rose to 817 after 11 new fatalities were reported by the Health department.
COVID-19 is a respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus that, according to unconfirmed reports, originated in China’s city of Wuhan in Hubei province in late 2019.
The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses named the novel coronavirus as SARS-CoV-2.
The virus causes mild symptoms such as fever and cough for most people but can cause serious illness such as pneumonia for others, especially older adults and people with existing health problems.
Coronavirus is one in a family of viruses whose surfaces have a crown-like appearance or corona.
Hence, the viruses are named for the spikes on their surfaces.
Worldwide, cases of the virus already reached 4,534,952 including 307,108 deaths and 1,633,185 recoveries.
Among the most impacted countries are the United States with 1,473,415 cases; 88,237 deaths and 260,146 recoveries; Russia, with 272,043; 2,537 D; and 63,166 R; United Kingdom, 236,711 C; 33,998 D; and no data on recoveries; Spain, 230,183 C; 27,459 D; 144,783 R; Italy, 223,885; 31,610 D; 120,205 R; Brazil, 220,291; 14,962 D; 84,970; Germany, 175,699 C; 8,001 D and 151,700.
