MANILA – The Department of Health on Sunday (24 May 2020) said that the number of coronavirus cases in the country rose to 14,035.

On its bulletin case no. 71, the DOH reported that as of 4 pm on Sunday, there were 258 new cases of the killer disease.

Of that number, 195 were from virus epicenter Metro Manila or 75% of the total pie even as the other regions chipped in 51 cases or 20%.

Repatriates accordingly accounted for 12 new cases or 5% of the whole stats for the day.

The number of individuals who prevailed in their fight with the deadly virus were recorded at 72 for a total of 3,249.

Deaths due to COVID-19 slightly went up to 868, after 5 cases were added to the toll.

It was also gathered Sunday that the government is in the midst of assessing whether the lockdowns in most affected areas can already be relaxed, like in Metro Manila, where majority of the cases are recorded.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the National Capital Region will “more likely” be placed under general community quarantine by June 1.

On Friday, the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases gave Philippines the green light to join clinical trials for COVID-19 vaccines being developed by four (4) groups based in Taiwan and China.

Worldwide cases now reached 5,311,089      including 2,112,198 recoveries and 342,104 deaths.
