MANILA – The Makati City government has already released more than PHP1-billion financial assistance via electronic money transfer to its residents affected by the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic, Mayor Abigail Binay said on Saturday.

Under the PHP2.7-billion Makatizen Economic Relief Program (MERP), Binay said the Makati residents aged 18 years old and above will receive cash assistance amounting to PHP5,000 through the “Maka-Tulong 5k for 500k+” project.

Binay said the distribution of the financial aid has surpassed the PHP1-billion mark just two weeks after the MERP was rolled out, wherein about 207,162 beneficiaries have received the assistance via GCash money transfer.

The mayor also lauded the cash aid recipients who have started their own businesses after receiving the cash aid, aside from providing their essential needs and paying water and electricity bills.

One of them is Diana Oblino, a resident of Barangay Olympia, who shared that because five members of their household are Makatizen cardholders—they received a total amount of PHP25,000 and they were able to pay their utility bills that had piled up during the quarantine.

The Oblino family was also able to put up a small sari-sari store business.

Binay earlier said those who already have existing Makatizen cards, yellow cards, and voters’ registrants are qualified to receive the PHP5,000 cash assistance from the local government. (PNA)
