MANILA, Philippines – San Miguel Corporation chairman and Chief Executive Officer Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco Jr. died of a lingering illness on Tuesday, June 16. He just turned 85 last Wednesday, 10 June 2020.
The death of the Filipino tycoon whose empire grew under the Marcos years, was confirmed by SMC boss Ramon Ang in a text message to an international news media Bloomberg.
It was gathered Cojuangco had a kidney transplant in 2013 but battled other illnesses as well.
Radio station dzRH said he died of lung cancer.
Danding Cojuangco was married to Soledad “Gretchen” Oppen-Cojuangco of Negros Occidental, with whom he had 4 children.
Following the footsteps of their father, his sons Charlie and Mark also dabbled in politics.
Charlie is currently a representative of Tarlac’s 1st District while Mark once served as Pangasinan congressman.
Cojuangco also had two children with his longtime partner, beauty queen Aileen “Leng” Damiles.
A known crony of strongman Ferdinand Marcos, Cojuangco was the first cousin of the late former president Corazon Aquino and uncle of former president Benigno Aquino III.
Way back in 1992, the chairman emeritus of Nationalist People’s Coalition political party joined the presidential derby but he ended up third in a seven-man race. (ia/SovereignPH.com)
