MANILA – The Department of Health on Sunday, 05 July 2020, registered a record number of 2,434 additional patients of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

It was the highest single-day rise in cases thus far since the outbreak of the virus in the country.

And with it, the record number of the confirmed cases pushed the country’s overall tally to a high of 44,254.

A big number of 489 recoveries was also set as new record on survivors which now stand at 11,942.

The Department of Health also reported seven (7) more fatalities of the new pathogen, pushing the number of individuals who succumbed to the disease to 1,297.

Under the health department’s Covid-Kaya counting system, 1,147 out of the 2,434 new patients, 1,147 are fresh cases while 1,287 are considered as late cases.

Late cases are those test results released by the DOH to patients four days late or more while fresh cases are test results released to patients within the past three days.

Active cases of the coronavirus in the country is only 31,015 individuals the DOH said.

This is obtained by subtracting the number of deaths and that of recoveries.

In Saturday’s update, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire announced that the department’s case bulletin reporting protocol may no longer include “fresh” and “late” categories starting this coming week.

Globally, cases of the virus already impacted over 11 million individuals including 530,000 deaths. (ia/SPH)
