MANILA – Malacañang on Monday urged a Land Transportation Office (LTO) official in the Visayas to “shape up” amid corruption allegations hurled against him.

In a virtual presser from Cagayan de Oro, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque reminded officials that President Rodrigo Duterte will never tolerate corruption.

“I’m warning po that LTO regional director in the Visayas, shape up po dahil the President will never tolerate corruption no matter kung saan level po iyan (because the President will never tolerate corruption no matter what level that is),” he said.

Roque did not name the said LTO regional director but said “he knows who he is”.

He said Palace will give the official time to change his erring ways before asking Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade to decide on his fate.

“Mayroon po akong isang malaking anomalya na baka isumbong na kay Secretary Tugade dito po sa Visayas, pero pinagbibigyan muna po natin iyong tao na affected na i-rectify iyong kaniyang mga pagkakamali (There is a huge anomaly that could be reported to Secretary Tugade in Visayas, but let’s give the person affected to rectify his mistakes),” he said.

In March 2019, Duterte signed the Republic Act (RA) 11235 or the “Motorcycle Crime Prevention Act” which was crafted to thwart crimes committed by motorcycle-riding suspects.

Under the law, riders must put plates both in the front and rear parts of their motorcycle.

The plate numbers should be big enough to be readable from a distance of 12 to 15 meters.

Currently, the LTO is currently trying to address the backlog on motorcycle plates.

However, the LTO is facing allegations of corruption which happened within the bidding process of various suppliers.

The LTO, a sectoral agency of the Department of Transportation, is tasked to register motor vehicles, issue driver’s and conductor’s licenses and permits, enforce transportation laws, rules, and regulations; and adjudicate apprehension cases. (PNA)
