MANILA – A van and a light truck collided with several barriers along the exclusive median busway on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (Edsa) early morning Tuesday.
In an incident report, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) attributed the accident to overspeeding.
It said the light truck driven by Isidro Caliwan initially collided with six concrete barriers, one plastic barrier, and one solar bollard, and was subsequently struck from behind by a Nissan Urvan.
“Sobrang overspeed ang closed van kaya nabulaga at bumangga sa barrier. May kasunod din Urban (sic) van na mabilis din kaya hindi nakaiwas at bumangga din sa likuran ng nauna ng bumanggang closed van (The closed van was overspeeding that’s why it was taken by surprise and collided with the barrier. It was followed by a speeding Urvan van and was unable to evade, hitting the closed van from behind),” the incident report read.
According to an MMDA report in early September, majority of road crashes in Metro Manila involved overspeeding and distracted drivers or those driving under the influence of alcohol.
From June 1 to Aug. 31, the MMDA report showed a steep drop in the number of accidents compared to the same period last year, with fewer vehicles plying Metro Manila roads due to limited mobility under community quarantine.
The driver of the Nissan Urvan, identified as Jose Andal Jr., had been taken to a hospital after sustaining injuries in the accident.
The van and the light truck were taken to the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group office in Camp Crame for investigation and will be transferred to an MMDA impounding area for safekeeping. (PNA)
