United States President Donald Trump on Friday said he will not participate in a virtual debate with Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.
The organizers of the debate chose to push for the two to face off virtually after Trump got confined for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) last weekend in a government hospital in Maryland. He went back to the White House early last week, an obvious violation of the need for people who recovered from Covid-19 to remain in isolation for at least 14 days
“I’m not going to do a virtual debate,” Trump, who is still recovering from Covid-19 at the White House, said in an interview with Fox Business.
“I’m not going to waste my time with a virtual debate. That’s not what debating is all about. You sit behind a computer and do a debate, that is ridiculous,” the US president added.
The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) announced on Friday that the second Trump-Biden encounter, scheduled for October 16, “will take the form of a town meeting, in which the candidates would participate from separate remote locations.”
The town meeting participants and the moderator, it added, will be located at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, Florida.
From Trump’s camp, Bill Stepien, his campaign manager, said the debate could still push through.
“The safety of all involved can easily be achieved without canceling a chance for voters to see both candidates go head to head,” said Stepien, who also tested positive for Covid-19.
Biden, on the other hand, has not tested positive for Covid-19.
Meanwhile, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she and other Democrats would seek a measure relating to the US Constitution’s 25th Amendment, allowing the vice president to take over should it be determined that the president “is unable” to fulfill his duties.
Pelosi’s also said Trump was suffering from “disassociation from reality [that] would be funny if it weren’t so deadly.”
The House Speaker was obviouly irked at Trump recently saying “I am a perfect physical specimen and I’m extremely young.”
