Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Wednesday said the Task Force Against Corruption can also initiate cases against lawmakers, clarifying that President Rodrigo Duterte’s refusal to investigate legislators does clip the power of the task force to do such.
The Task Force Against Corruption is headed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and was tasked by Duterte to go after corrupt government officials.
“The President stated that if the involvement of a member of Congress, for instance, is germane to the anomalous transaction, then the latter’s inclusion in criminal charges will have to be endorsed to the Ombudsman through (my office),” Guevarra said.
It can be recalled that Duterte said on Monday that he could not reveal publicly the names of lawmakers who were allegedly involved in corruption because they were not part of the executive department.
“If I cannot investigate the congressmen, then I have no authority to be releasing their names,” the President said. SOVEREIGNPH
