A Quezon City court has found couple Benito and Wilma Tiamzon guilty of kidnapping and serious illegal detention, sentencing them to reclusion perpetua or up to 40 years in prison.
The Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 216 also ordered the Tiamzon couple, believed to be top officials of the Communist Party of the Philippines, to pay complainant Lieutenant Abraham Claro Casis P75,000 as moral damages, P75,000 as civil indemnity, and P75,000 as exemplary damages.
The cases against the Tiamzon couple dates back to 1988 over four soldiers who were held captive by the communists for more than two months. Charges were filed in court in 1990 and the Tiamzons were arrested and charged in court in 2014.
Casis, one of the four soldiers allegedly kidnapped and detained by members of the New People’s Army in Quezon province for 75 days, said in his testimony that he saw the Tiamzons at the detention center where he and his fellow soldiers were detained. SOVEREIGNPH
