The House of Representatives has 98 confirmed cases of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) after it undertook a mass swab testing, it was reported on Tuesday.
The mass testing was initiated by House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco beginning last November 10.
House Secretary General Mark Llandro Mendoza said almost those who tested positive were asymptomatic, or not showing symptoms of possible Covid-19 infection like dry cough and high fever, among others.
“This happened less than one month after Speaker Velasco assumed office,” he pointed said.
The 98 confirmed Covid-19 cases is almost 5 percent of the approximately 2,000 House lawmakers and employees who were tested.
Mendoza said prior to latest testing, the House recorded 93 confirmed Covid-19 cases from March 1 to November 2, of which all recovered except for two lawmakers and three House employees who succumbed to the virus.“Speaker Velasco ordered the mass testing to ensure the health and safety of everyone in the Batasan Complex, while the legislative chamber carries out its constitutional duties amid the pandemic,” he added.
