Two organizations of pediatricians are recommending that children stay at home and not go to malls to avoid getting infected with the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
“It is strongly recommended by pediatricians for children to remain at home to minimize the risk of getting infected and lower viral transmission,” the Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS) and the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of the Philippines (PIDSP) said in a joint statement.
“The risk of acquiring Covid-19 both by children and other household members far outweigh the benefits of bringing children to shopping malls to celebrate the holiday season,” they added.
PPS member Dr. Bambi Kasala added that children are “susceptible” to Covid-19.
“Why are we allowing or even asking if they can go to the malls when we won’t even allow our children back to school?” Kasala said in an online forum on Wednesday.
PIDSP President Mary Ann Bunyi also expressed concern that allowing children to visit malls could lead to a surge in Covid-19 cases. The two organizations issued their position in light of proposals by some Metro Manila mayors to allow minors or children to go to the malls. Certain mayors have said they would consult pediatricians and experts on the matter. SOVEREIGNPH
