The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has confirmed an incident where a Chinese survey vessel entered the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), forcing the AFP to deploy an aircraft to “challenge” it.
Lt. Gen. Arnulfo Burgos, AFP Northern Luzon Command chief, said previous reports on the presence of a Chinese research ship in Philippine waters last September turned out to be true, he said in a press conference.
Burgos said a Philippine military aircraft was deployed to challenge the Chinese vessel that was lurking 59 nautical miles west of Calayan Island on Sept. 18.
”We flew over and then we challenged the ship and it responded,” said Burgos in Filipino.
However, he said that a weather disturbance might have forced the Chinese ship to country’s territorial waters to seek refuge.
On the third day after the Chinese ship was first spotted within the country’s EEZ, it was no longer within Philippine territorial waters. SOVEREIGNPH
