The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has been tasked to conduct a case build up and identify the perpetrators behind killing Los Baños Mayor Caesar Perez in the evening of December 3.
The Department of Justice (DOJ), the mother agency of the NBI, issued
a memorandum dated December 4 ordering NBI Director Eric Distor to conduct an investigation and if evidence warrants, to file the appropriate cases against the persons allegedly responsible for Perez’s death.
Furthermore, the NBI was required to submit to its mother agency periodic reports on the progress of its investigation within 30 days.
The motive behind the killing of Perez has yet to be identified, but Los Baños Municipal Administrator Robert Laviña said the slain mayor has been receiving death threats after his name was included in President Rodrigo Duterte’s list of local officials believed to be involved in the illegal drug trade.
But while Perez was accused of having links with the drug trade, he shrugged off such accusations, believing he had nothing to prove.
“As far as I know, based on the messages on his cellphone that he showed to me in confidence, he started getting daily death threats after his name was included in the list,” Laviña said in a mix of Filipino and English.Perez was shot on Thursday night at the Los Baños municipal hall and died at the hospital where he was treated.
