The island kingdom of Bahrain became the second nation in the world to grant an emergency-use authorization for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccine made by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech.

The United Kingdom became the first nation to approve the use a Covid-19 vaccine also from Pfizer and BioNtech.

“The confirmation of approval by the National Health Regulatory Authority of the kingdom of Bahrain followed thorough analysis and review undertaken by the authority of all available data,” the kingdom said in a statement.

Bahrain did not say how may vaccines it has purchased, nor when vaccinations would begin. The Pfizer shots, a so-called “mRNA vaccine,” contain a piece of genetic code that trains the immune system to recognize the spiked protein on the surface of the virus.

Pfizer has avoided queries on the details of its agreement with Bahrain, but said “We have developed detailed logistical plans and tools to support effective vaccine transport, storage and continuous temperature monitoring.”

“Our distribution is built on a flexible just in time system which will ship the frozen vials to the point of vaccination,” it said. SOVEREIGNPH
