As early as 2013, Valenzuela Mayor Rex Gatchalian already called the attention of NLEX Corp. on the inefficiency of its EasyTrip RFID (radio frequency identification) electronic collection system for the tollgates of the Northern Luzon Expressway (NLEX) in his city.

It was in 2013 that Gatchalian started his first term as Valenzuela mayor.

In a letter dated December 3, 2020 to Raul Ignacio, Chief operating officer of NLEX Corp., Gatchalian even pointed out that as early as seven years ago, when he was not still mayor but used the NLEX as a motorist, he noticed how inefficient the RFID system that NLEX Corp. installed at the tollgates.

“It is indeed appalling that my call in behalf of my constituents fell on deaf ears, as you still have the same terrible system seven years ago,” Gatchalian said in his letter to Ignacio.

“Yet you were even quick to deny the existence of the problem in spite of the multiple news in different channels and platforms, as well as the countless angry posts and rants of netizens, who were stuck in traffic for several hours due to the long lines at your RFID tollgates,” the mayor said further in his letter.

Gatchalian gave NLEX Corp. 72 hours from the receipt of his December 3 letter to file their explanation on why the city government should not suspend its business permit. Also, NLEX Corp. was given 24 hours from the receipt of the letter to submit an action plan on how to solve the traffic snarls at the NLEX tollgates that Valenzuela hosts.

On Monday, or four days after Gatchalian wrote the letter to NLEX Corp., the Valenzuela City Government suspended the company’s business permit, allowing motorists who use the tollgates in the city to pass through without paying toll fees.

Gatchalian posted the copy of his letter in his Facebook page, which has so far gotten more than 14,000 likes, 1,100 comments and 3,000 shares.“Valenzuelanos, we deserve better. For everyone’s information hindi po nagtatapos ang laban natin sa bulok na RFID system ng NLEX sa social media. We served them this kanina. Please read. It contains one of the many things we intend to do if they fail to solve this problem,” he said in the FB post. SOVEREIGNPH
