The Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) terrorist group has shown no let up in causing violence in Maguindanao, with civilians also getting caught in the strife.

Latest reports show that authorities are probing a reported mortar shelling that left a pregnant woman dead in Barangay Pusao of Shariff Saydona Mustapha town at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

Mursid Mamolintao, the victim’s brother-in-law, identified the victim as Rabiyah Damada Lakim, 37, who was declared dead on arrival at the Maguindanao provincial hospital in nearby Shariff Aguak town.

Mamolintao could not specifically say where the rifle grenade or mortar came from, but said government forces and the BIFF have been trading bullets and mortars in Shariff Saydona.

“We heard some six explosions before the one that hit my sister-in-law,” Mamolintao said in the vernacular over a radio interview on Wednesday.

On December 15, soldiers and BIFF fighters clashed in the morning in Northern Kabuntalan, Maguindanao, leading to the seizure of BIFF war materiel at the clash site.

“An Army trooper was wounded in the gun battle and is now being treated at this camp’s hospital,” Maj. Gen. Juvymax Uy, Army’s 6th Infantry Division commander, said.

Soldiers from the Army’s 34th Infantry battalion chanced upon 10 BIFF gunmen under the faction of Omar Abdullah in Barangay Macabenban around 5:0 a.m., which led to a firefight, he said.

On December 13, six civilians were injured, including three children, when a grenade landed on the roof of a house in Datu Salibo, Maguindanao amid a raging battle between government troops and BIFF members.

On December 9, the military foiled an attack by the BIFF on an Army detachment in Sharif Aguak, Maguindanao. No one from the government side was hurt in the attack

The three towns are situated near the vast Liguasan marshland, where the BIFF is known to operate. SOVEREIGNPH
