Local government units (LGUs) may be allowed to organize fireworks displays to greet the New Year, according to Department of Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire on Saturday.

Vergeire made the statement after President Rodrigo Duterte prohibited the use of firecrackers in the entire country.

During the Laging Handa briefing, Vergeire said the IATF is amenable to authorizing LGUs to manage firework displays in their respective jurisdictions but with measures in place to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus disease 2019.

“The IATF is currently discussing this. The LGUs should ensure that protocols for minimum health standards would still be enforced and they should see to it that overcrowding will be prevented in the firework display,” she added.

Duterte advocates banning totally the use of firecrackers by 2021. Based on his experience as Davao City mayor, there were no firecracker-related injuries or deaths in his city during Christmas and New Year celebrations after he imposed a ban on firecracker use in 2001. SOVEREIGNPH
