British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the country’s senior ministers discussed on Saturday urgent steps to contain a new strain of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) that spread faster, which could lead to a surge of cases in the country.
This, as Britain reported 28,507 new Covid-19 cases on Friday and 489 deaths.
The BBC reported that London and southeast England would be placed under tighter restrictions and will not relax rules during Christmas. No further details were disclosed.
Johnson will hold a press conference where he will discuss the government’s plans in light of a rise in infections across London and southeast England, which was linked to the new Covid-19 strain that is more transmissible.
“We have alerted the World Health Organization and are continuing to analyze the available data to improve our understanding,” said England’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty.
The discovery of the new Covid-19 strain that spreads faster comes after the country started its vaccination program against the virus using the approved product of Pfizer. SOVEREIGNP
