The Philippines has signed up with the World Health Organization (WHO) initiative to source vaccines for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19)  from a supply pool of 2 billion doses.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that the Philippines is among the 85 countries that has made a formal request to source Covid-10 vaccines from the WHO’s COVAX program, which already has an assured supply of 2 billion doses of the vaccines from various suppliers and manufacturers. However, she did not give further details.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that some 190 countries and economies participating in the COVAX program will have access to vaccines “during the first half of next year.”

The arrangements bring together pharmaceutical makers including AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, and the Serum Institute of India. He said the message is “vaccines will complement, not replace, the existing effective tools we have for suppressing transmission and saving lives.” SOVEREIGNPH
