Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello 3rd slammed an agency overseen by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) for setting at P10,000 the cash assistance for workers who get sick from the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

Bellos said that the cash assistance pegged by the Employees Compensation Commission (ECC) for workers getting sick from Covid-19 pandemic was a pittance.

“Ten thousand, susmaryosep, not enough to buy pain relievers. We need to increase the benefits of our workers,” he said, adding the cash assistance for workers who fall ill from Covid-19 should be not less than P50,000.

He added the ECC has enough funds or P90 billion.

“P90 billion in funds just sleeping in the bank. It’s earning a lot but the workers are deprived of getting enough benefits,” Bello said.Under its mandate, the ECC should provide compensation to government and private-sector workers in case of work-related illness, injury, or death.

Bello is the ex-officio board chair of the agency. SOVEREIGNPH
