Up to 70 members of the elite Special Action Force (SAF) of the Philippine National Police were deployed to the usually crowded Divisoria shopping district and its adjacent malls and supermarkets, to enforce health measures to control the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
“Nakikita namin sa dagsa ng tao ngayon na nalalapit na ang kapasukuhan. It’s about five days, lalong dumami ‘yong gustong magkaroon ng rush na pamimili (We saw the influx of people as Christmas is nearing. It’s about five days [to Christmas], and more people are making a rush to buy gifts),” Manila Police District (MPD) Director Police Brigadier Gen. Leo Francisco said.
“Ang challenge lang talaga, ‘yong pagme-maintain ng physical distancing… kasi siksikan ang tao, maliit ang lugar (The real challenge here is to maintain physical distancing, as people also crowd in small places),” he added.
Francisco said that besides social distancing, those who go shopping should wear face masks and face shields.
He did not say how people violating Covid-19 health measures will be penalized, but the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases said rules on wearing of face shields will be released soon. SOVEREIGNPH
