The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded two more earthquakes in southern Luzon on Friday, bringing to at least five the number of tremors that has occurred in the country on Christmas day.
Phivolcs said one earthquake was recorded in Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours and a tremor shook San Francisco, Quezon in the afternoon.
While Phivolcs did not disclose the magnitude of the tremor it recorded from Taal Volcano, it was forced to raise Alert Level 1 (abnormal) over volcano area, which means sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas can occur and threaten areas within the area or the Taal Volcano Island (TVI).
Phivolcs also strongly recommended that entry into TVI, Taal’s permanent danger zone, especially the vicinities of the main crater and the Daang Kastila fissure, must remain strictly prohibited.
In Quezon province, Phivolcs said a magnitude 4.3 shook San Francisco, Quezon at 6:04 p.m. It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 5 kilometers.
On Friday, Phivolcs said separate quakes hit Batangas, Occidental Mindoro and Davao Occidental. Netizens also reported feeling quakes in Bataan, Pampanga and Bulacan. SOVEREIGNPH
