A new strain of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) has reportedly been detected in Sabah, Malaysia and could intrude the Philippines.
In an interview with a national daily, Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan said he is asking for assistance from the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) for measures to prevent the new strain from entering Mindanao.
“We have a porous coastlines and a vast Sulu Sea between us and Sabah, and only the national government is equipped with the capacity and logistics to put in place and in operation, safeguards and preemptive measures called for,” Tan said.
Sulu’s own Task Force Covid-19, however, is calling on the public not to panic and to rely only on information from official sources. He added that their frontliners will intensity monitoring of Covid-19 cases.
“We reiterate our call to them to avoid speculations and the spread of fake and harmful mongering,” he said.As reports of new Covid-19 strains are emerging, President Rodrigo Duterte will convene the IATF-EID today to come up with measures to protect the Philippine population.
