The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded two earthquakes from Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island on Saturday.
Phivolcs said it recorded two volcanic earthquakes during a 24-hour observation period, and observed “moderate emission of white steam-laden plumes that rose 200 meters before drifting northwest.”
“Ground deformation data from continuous GPS measurements recorded a slight inflation of the lower and middle slopes since June 2020 followed by a pronounced inflation of the western middle slopes this November,” the agency further said.
The two quakes recorded by Phivolcs from Kanlaon Volcano prompted the agency to raise Alert Level 1, “which means that it is at an abnormal condition and has entered a period of unrest.”
“The local government units and the public are strongly reminded that entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) must be strictly prohibited due to the further possibilities of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions,” Phivolcs said.
Kanlaon is the third volcano in the country where tremors were recorded in the past few days. The Phivolcs also reported on Saturday four earthquakes from Mayon Volcano, and one earthquake from Taal Volcano.
Phivolcs also raised Alert Level 1 in areas of the Mayon and Taal and their vicinities. SOVEREIGNPH
