As the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) celebrated its 52nd anniversary last December 26, two members of its armed wing, the New People’s Army (NPA), were arrested by government security forces in Atimonan, Quezon on the same day.
The government troops identified the NPA terrorists as Ruel Custodio alias Baste, head of Finance Staff of the Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee who had a warrant for kidnapping and illegal possession of explosives; and Ruben Estocado alias Oyo, a political instructor of Bicol Regional Party Committee. The duo were arrested in the house of Rhodora “Dhoray” Blas Tan, a Board Member from the 4th District of Quezon Province.
Major Gen. Greg Almerol, commander of 2nd Infantry Division, said that “this incident shows the drive of our soldiers and police in uniting to end insurgency in our country.”
“Instead of celebrating their anniversary, the few remaining NPA terrorists remain in hiding. Especially in the last few months where most of their cadres were either killed in combat, apprehended or have surrendered to avail of the government’s livelihood programs,” he added. The arresting soldiers and police seized from the terrorists two calibre . 45 pistols with magazines and ammunition, two hand grenades, several electronic devices, and subversive documents that could lead the authorities in uncovering their extortion activities.
