The Department of Health (DOH) said on Saturday that the new and more infectious variant of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) originating from the United Kingdom has not yet been detected in the Philippines.
“This is to clarify that as of January 2, 2021, the Philippine Genome Center (PCG) has not detected the UK variant in the country,” the health agency said in a statement
DOH added the PCG is set to conduct genome sequencing on Monday using the positive swab samples retrieved from recent travelers from countries that have confirmed the presence of the new variant.
It said there will be continuous monitoring on the entry of the new variant of Covid-19 into the country.
While there are fears the new Covid-19 variant is more infectious, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the transmission of the virus is still the same or through droplet infection. The Philippines has already imposed a travel ban on 20 countries including the UK, United States, Singapore, Canada, and Spain to prevent the entry of the new Covid-19 variant into the country. The travel ban will be up to January 15, 2021. SOVEREIGNPH
