The military will stop its probe on the unauthorized use of Chinese vaccines for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) by the Presidential Security Group, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesman said on Monday.
In a statement, AFP spokesperson Maj. Gen. Edgard Arevalo said the military chief, Gen. Gilbert Gapay, has ordered a halt on the probe, due to the recent pronouncement of President Rodrigo Duterte prohibiting the PSG to divulge details.
“Do not obey the summons…. I am ordering you to stay put in the barracks,” Duterte told PSG chief Brig. Gen. Jesus Durante 3rd in a late-night televised address.
The President said members of the PSG took the Covid-19 vaccines from China’s Sinopharm as a form of “self-preservation.”
“I am prepared to defend my soldiers. I will not allow them for all of their good intentions, to be brutalized in hearing,” he said.
The Philippines Food and Drug Administration has yet to approve Sinopharm’s Covid-19 vaccine but China’s drug regulators recently approved its use for mass vaccination. SOVEREIGNPH
