Former Mandaluyong City mayor Benhur Abalos has been appointed chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), Senator Christopher “Bong” Go confirmed on Sunday.
This is the first time that a son of a former MMDA chairman will be heading the agency. Benhur’s father Benjamin Abalos, also a former Mandaluyong mayor, headed the MMDA for one year from January 2001 and later was appointed chairman of the Commission on Elections. The 58-year old Abalos replaced former MMDA head Danilo Lim, who passed away last Wednesday at 65 years old after contracting the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Abalos was first elected as mayor of Mandaluyong City in 1998, and was congressman in the city’s lone district in 2004. He served anew as Mandaluyong City mayor from 2007 to 2016.
The appointment of Abalos also marks the first time in more than 11 years that a former or active mayor from a Metro Manila local government unit was appointed MMDA chairman. Since former Marikina mayor Bayani Fernando retired as MMDA head in November 2009, the chairman of the agency were not Metro Manila mayors, with Lim being the last of them. Senator Francis Tolentino also headed the MMDA from July 2010 to October 2016. SOVEREIGNPH
