Japan‘s health ministry has detected a new variant of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), which may not have originated from the UK or South Africa.
It was detected in four people, ranging from their teens to their 40s, who arrived from Brazil. While the new Covid-19 strain that infected them had similarities to strains first reported in the UK and South Africa, it does not appear to have been spotted before.
The number of persons now affected by the new variant strain in Japan is now 34, with three cases involving persons who did not arrive from overseas.
Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has already reported the new variant to the World Health Organization.
