Despite the inclement weather, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go sent an outreach team last January 7, 2021 to Surigao del Sur to provide needed assistance to the victims hit by Typhoon Vicky.
“Pardon me for not going to Surigao del Sur because I want to be there now. But we found it hard to travel therebecause of bad weather. Yet, you can count on the government to do whatever it can so all of you can be assisted amid these hardships. Trust us because we prioritize your welfare,” he said in Filipino.
On behalf of the Senator, the team met with a total of 1,000 typhoon victims at the municipal gyms in San Miguel and Barobo towns. In strict compliance with health and safety protocols, they provided each beneficiary with meals, food and medicine packs, vitamins, medical-grade and reusable masks, and face shields.
Selected beneficiaries were also given shoes while others received bicycles so they can travel with ease amid limited transportation. Others were provided tablets to enhance their children’s home-based learning experience under the blended learning set-up.
As chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Go encouraged those in urgent need of medical treatment and services to seek the assistance of his office. He also informed beneficiaries that they can conveniently avail of medical assistance from the government through the Malasakit Center at the Butuan Medical Center in Butuan City.
As part of the government’s recovery efforts, various national agencies also took part in the activities to deliver aid for the beneficiaries to help rebuild their lives. The Department of Social Welfare and Development gave separate financial assistance for the victims’ daily needs while the Department of Agriculture offered farmers vegetable seeds and financial aid.
Also, the Department of Trade and Industry, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, and National Housing Authority committed to extend further assistance upon completing their assessments.
Go went on to recognize local public officials for their invaluable contributions and dedication to their communities. Among those present during the activities were Surigaro del Sur Governor Alexander Ty Pimentel, Vice Governor Librado C. Navarro, Barobo Mayor Joey S. Pama and Vice Mayor Allan C. Bernal, and San Miguel Mayor Hazel H. Elizalde and Vice Mayor Rolmar F. Basalan.
Moreover, through Go’s efforts, there will be sufficient funding in the 2021 budget for the construction of multi-purpose buildings at Barangay Port Lamon, Hinatuan and Barangay Maglambing in Tagbina both in Surigao Del Sur. SOVEREIGNPH
