The vaccine developed by Sinovac Biotech of China is only 50.4-percent effective against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), researchers said on Tuesday after recent tests.
Several scientists and observers in Brazil blasted the Butantan biomedical center for the release of partial data just days ago that generated unrealistic expectations. Even the Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro has criticized the Chinese vaccine.
“We have a good vaccine. Not the best vaccine in the world. Not the ideal vaccine,” said microbiologist Natalia Pasternak, criticizing Butantan’s triumphant tone.
Last week, Brazilian researchers celebrated results showing Sinovac’s vaccine was 78-percent effective against “mild-to-severe” Covid-19 cases, describing the rate as “clinical efficacy.”
However, the researchers said nothing at the time about another group that had “very mild” infections who were among those who received the vaccine that did not require clinical assistance.
The Covid-19 vaccines of Western drug companies were shown to be up to 95-percent effective. On Monday, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that at least 50,000 doses of Sinovac’s Covid-19 vaccine is set to arrive in the Philippines in February, which will allow the government to start its vaccination drive against the virus also next month.
