The coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic has created a preference among almost 90 percent of Filipinos for public transportation and bicycles, according to a recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey.
A SWS survey of which results were released on Friday showed that 87 percent Filipinos preferred that bicycles and public transportation be prioritized over private vehicles. The survey was conducted in November 2020.
The SWS survey also found that 6 percent of Filipinos disagree while 7 percent were undecided on the prioritization of public transport, bicycles and pedestrians over private vehicles amid the current pandemic.
The poll, which was also sponsored by the Department of Health (DOH), showed 85 percent Filipinos believed that their locality can “become a great place for cycling and walking.” But 8 percent disagreed with that view, and 7 percent were undecided.
“Net agreement that ‘it is possible for my city/municipality to become a great place for walking and cycling’ is very strong in all basic demographics… (and that) ‘the roads in Philippine cities and municipalities will be better off if public transportation, bicycles and pedestrians are given priority over private vehicles’ is also very strong across the board,” SWS said.
The survey covered 1,500 Filipinos nationwide aged 18 years old and above, distributed as follows: 600 were in Balance Luzon, and 300 each in Metro Manila, the Visayas and Mindanao. SOVEREIGNPH
