Residents of Barangay North Bay Boulevard (NBBS) South in Navotas City scrambled out of their homes Wednesday afternoon after an ice plant leaked out accidentally ammonia into the air.
Navotas Mayor Toby Tiangco appealed to residents in the area as vapors released from the ice plant are toxic to humans.
“Please avoid North Blvd [Boulevard] and R-10, may ammonia leak from T.P. Marcelo Ice Plant and Cold Storage. Nanduon na po BFP [Bureau of Fire Protection] and mga ambulance natin sa mga residente pls evacuate (The Bureau of Fire Protection and ambulances are there. So I call on the residents there to please evacuate),” said Tiangco in a tweet.
In a separate radio interview Tiangco said the local government will prioritize the evacuation while authorities investigate the cause of the leak.
“Mapaalis muna ang residente and then mahinto yung leak. As soon as maalis ang residente, ichecheck ang ice plant kung nasara ang leak (We will let the residents there to leave the area and then we will stop the leak. As soon as the residents there leave, we will check the ice plant if the leak has been stopped),” he said.TV reports said a number of citizens have been rushed to hospitals because of inhaling the leaked ammonia.
