The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will start conducting weekend registration of voters staring February 20, 2021 to make up for the low turnout of new registrants.
In a radio interview, Jimenez said the Comelec en banc also approved the additional compensation for its employees who will have to work during Saturdays to facilitate the weekend registration of voters.
“The Saturday voter registration will start on 20 February in all the Comelec offices in the cities and municipalities,” Jimenez said.
Also, the Comelec is looking to expand its voter registration through satellite areas.
“Hopefully, by the end of this month, we will be able to announce the schedule for satellite registration but for the meantime, it will only be held in the Comelec offices,” he said.
So far, the Comelec is below its target of four million new voters with 1.3 million registered so far for the 2022 presidential polls.
“Since 1 September (2020), we only have more or less, 1.3 million new registrants as compared to our target of four million, so we are too far from our target,” Jimenez said.
He added that those seeking registration should book an appointment through the Comelec website.“We encourage you to please make an appointment because if you will just go there as walk in, you will not be among the priorities, whereas if you have an appointment, you will be accommodated immediately,” Jimenez explained.
